In support of the Oldsmar Library's mission statement to provide residents
of all ages with information in a variety of formats, access to the Internet is available to all
Oldsmar library patrons.
The following code of conduct governs patron usage of the Oldsmar Library's
Internet Resources to gather information that is not available through other library materials:
- All internet computers in the library
are filtered as specified by the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA)
and the June 23, 2003 United States Supreme Court decision relating thereto.
In doing so, Oldsmar Library understands that the required technology
protection measures may not be fully effective in blocking intended sites
and may inadvertently block unintended sites. (CIPA provides technology
protection measures that block visual depictions that are obscene and child
pornography for all customers, and in addition for minors age 16 and under,
visual depictions that are harmful to minors (as defined in the United
States Code (1) and case law.)
- In conjunction with the Oldsmar
Library's policy, the library staff does not act in loco parentis when any
child is utilizing these resources. Monitoring or limiting access to the
Internet by a child is the responsibility of the parent or legal guardian,
NOT the library staff.
- To assure that patrons of all ages
are able to access Internet sites that have been mistakenly blocked, Oldsmar
Library will provide a method by which they can request that such sites be
unblocked and will unblock such sites in a timely manner.
- Downloading and saving information
to the hard drive is not permitted. (DOES NOT APPLY TO WIRELESS ACCESS)
- In accordance with Florida Statutes
(Chapters 847.001 through 847.0135) sending, displaying or printing obscene
material is a violation of law that could result in arrest and/or
imprisonment.
- The library staff is available to provide limited
assistance and has the authority to determine appropriate use of the
Internet at the Oldsmar Library.
- The Internet is an unregulated
medium and the Oldsmar Library assumes no responsibility for content or
accuracy of the information retrieved. Electronic mail, chat rooms, etc. are
not regulated and some may not be appropriate or safe. Personal information
may not be safe to disclose via the internet.
- Technical difficulties often
interrupt the relay of information; at times the network will not be
operating because of these difficulties.
- Printing is 10 cents per page.
(PRINTING IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR WIRELESS ACCESS USERS)
VIOLATORS OF THESE RULES WILL BE
DENIED THE PRIVILEGE OF USING THE INTERNET AT THE OLDSMAR LIBRARY
